A Fiercely Mancunian Wedding: Maria & Sam at The Black Friars, Salford
Porto, 2021. A Champions League final, a sea of City blue, and a chance encounter that started Maria and Sam’s journey.
I’m Paul, the Gingerbeard behind Gingerbeard Weddings, and after living in Manchester for 20 years, this one was close to home in every sense. It was loud, brilliant and fiercely Mancunian from start to finish.

From Porto to Didsbury
Cut to Didsbury. Beneath a classic Manchester sky, Maria and Sam were married. After meeting at a Champions League final in Porto, getting married back in Manchester felt like the story coming full circle.

A Red Bus to Salford (It Should Have Been Blue)
We took a classic red bus across the border to Salford to kick off the night at The Black Friars. Yes, we know it should have been blue.
Moving a wedding party by bus is brilliant for documentary wedding photography. Everyone’s together, everyone’s in a good mood and the best moments happen without any planning.

A Soundtrack That Was Pure Manchester
The soundtrack was pure Manchester: a mix of City chants, Hacienda basslines and indie anthems, with a live acoustic set from Jordan Phillips. But when Clint Boon stepped up to the decks, the whole place went off.
It was less like a standard wedding reception and more like a legendary night at FAC51. The Hacienda days might be history, but Maria and Sam just threw the ultimate sequel.

Photographing a Party Wedding on Film and Digital
A night like this is why I shoot digital and analogue at every wedding. Film gives the dancefloor chaos a timeless, grainy feel, while digital keeps me ready for the moments that happen in a flash. You can read more about why I shoot film on my analogue page.

Yes, I’m based in Manchester, so it’s my home turf. I also shoot weddings across the UK, in Europe and beyond.

Absolutely. Whether it’s a ceremony in one area and a party in another, with a bus in between, I love weddings that travel. It gives the day a natural flow and plenty of unposed moments.
Do you stay for the dancefloor?
Yes. I don’t disappear when the party starts. If your wedding is going to be a big night, I’ll be there for the dancing, the chaos and the final song.
